Configure DHCP Server In Server 2003

Install and configure DHCP server on Windows Server 2003

To configure DHCP server we will use the Manage Your Server window that opens up by default on windows server 2003 when starting up. if the page does not show up go to Start, All Programs, Administrative Tools, and click on Manage Your Server. the page should come up:

Once you get to the page above, click on Add or remove a role. The Manage Your Server Wizard will come up. by clicking next, windows will do a preliminary steps check on your server for compatibilities.
If everything is fine on your server, you should get to the following screen:

Select DHCP server from the list, and click Next.  Next, you will get the summary of selections. by clicking next you are indicating you want to run the following services:
  • Install DHCP Server
  • Run the new scope wizard to configure the new DHCP scope.
Click Next. The installation of DHCP should start.

After DHCP has been installed, the new scope wizard should come up. Click Next on the wizard.
On the next screen type the name of the scope along with a description:

After filling the name and the description click next. On the next screen, you need to specify the range of IP addresses you want the DHCP server to assign to hosts on your network.remember that some of the devices on your network like printers, routers, switches etc, need static IP addresses to function properly, so is always a good idea to leave some IP addresses out of   the scope for these devices.
I will choose the class C scheme, and I will setup the range from 10-254 and a subnet mask of 24, which is 255.255.255.0 the default subnet mask for a class C network:

After entering all the information, click next.  Next, you are presented with the option to exclude any IP address that you don’t want the DHCP to assign to any computer, if you have a printer or router with an IP addresses in the range of the scope we setup above, now is time to exclude it:

If you don’t have any IP address to exclude, click next.  Next, you will need to specify the lease duration a device can have for an IP address assigned by DHCP server. if you have many portables on your network, choose a short duration, like a day, or if you more fixed devices like desktops, choose a longer duration, like 3 days. I will choose 3 days:

After picking your number, click next. Next, you are asked to configure the DHCP options:

Select the first option, Yes, I want to configure these options now. click next. Next you are asked to enter the IP address of your router:

Enter the IP address of your router ( if you are doing this at home, enter the address of your broadband router). Click Next. Next you are asked to for a domain name and DNS Server:

Enter the Parent Domain, which it should be the name of the domain you entered when configuring active directory, then enter the server name where DNS is installed. I assume it is the same server we are currently installing DHCP server on. click next.
Next, you are asked to enter the IP address of Wins server:

Enter the name of the Wins Server if you have one, click on resolve, and then Add. click next. Nnext, you are asked if you want to active the scope now:

Select the first option, yes, I want to activate this scope now, otherwise select the second option, click next. Lastly you will get the finish window. with the message, you have successfully completed the new scope wizard. click on Finish. And then you will get this window:

Congratulations, you have setup DHCP Server on this server now. go to Start, All Programs, Administrative tools, DHCP to see your creation. enjoy!
